"Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you." ~ Friedrich W. Nietzsche

Hello!

This site still receives a lotta traffic. Thank you for your continued interest.

I am still currently writing horror/suspense/pulp only in longer form. Visit my alter ego HERE for continued updates and current fiction. And please, you can call me Jodi or whatever you called me before I went all nom de plume.

Thanks for the years of loyal friendship and support.

Scars at Pulp Metal Magazine

The dark is seductive.

It needs.

It wants.

It's hard to resist.

Keep the blindfold on.

Thank you to editor Jason Michel for publishing my story.

Carrie Clevenger introduced me to Johnny Hollow. I was smitten. She dared me to write a story to one of their songs. I chose 'Dark Thing', which is playing as you read this. The lyrics can be read here. (Stay tuned to read Carrie's 'Dark Thing' story this Friday. I personally can't wait. UPDATE: Turns out. Her piece is so fantastically wonderful, she will be submitting to a mag instead. I'll blog it when its up.)

Fantastic story, Jodi! Loved that 'Scar' was short for scarecrow!

Angel Zapata said...

Loved it! The whole shadow man, creepy Scar fella had me praying for light. Keep doing what you're doin', Jodi.

Mike - Yes, you can take your blindfold off. I'm not responsible for what you may find. ;)

Linda- You keep a garden, right? Not all scarecrows are bad, you just need to watch out for their shadows.

Laura- Glad you liked the name Scar, it was also a metaphor for Lucy's life.

Ang- It takes it getting damn dark to get you praying for light. Glad you enjoyed. ;)

Jodi, I thought it was gonna be hard to top Weeping Stones but you have created a very dark and disturbing world here.
Stuff the blindfold, just poke my eyes out now (but please replace them when you have another story out!!!)

I can only take so many shivers in one night. I just got done watching PARANORMAL ACTIVITY so I'm extra jumpy at this point. And jeez... is that frikkin song creepy enough? That said, Jodi, you delivered us another tale as only you can...

How could you stand by and watch Lucy swing?

Thanks for swinging by and enjoying my horror, buddy.

Hi Jodi,
I'm late on this one, but I'm glad to have cornered some time away to read this fabulous bloody piece - creepy and suspenseful. I find writing action scenes difficult, but you made it look easy.
Nice work girl!

Jodi MacArthur said...

Thank you, Erin! Funny you mention the action scene- I really struggle with them as well. I wish it was easy.

You should submit something to Pulp Metal - I they'd dig your work. ;)

Great, very distinctive story, Jodi. :)

Jodi MacArthur said...

Thank you,Steve! I wanted to tell you I really enjoyed your review of Peter Straub's book. I've read several of his, and for some reason I'd haven't read Ghost Story. I will definitely purchase now.

I checked out your website (couldn't find a place to comment) but I see you are an active writer as well. I'm excited to dig into your work.

Jason's doing a great job, I think - PMM is an excellent way to discover new writers (new to me, that is). :)

I look forward to reading more from you, Jodi. :)

Thank you, Steve. I agree full heartedly. And I look forward to reading more of your goth victorian ghost story.

Charlee! Hey, girl. I checked out your new super cool blog. The colors are so great and just has energy. I was having a hard time leaving a rain comment, but I'll come back later and try again. Your my space page is gorgeous as well. Good mix of colors.

I can't believe it took me so long to get around to reading this, but boy was it worth the wait.

Such a well written dark tale. I saw what was coming -- unlike poor Lucy -- but felt compelled to read, and what a delicious twist that scarecrow switch was. I could imagine Luke's gagged horror as he saw her coming, blindfolded through the field towards him -- whether or not he saw Scar beside her, or if she was imagining the creature in her madness -- that was real. You can't argue with metal through flesh.

The taut descriptions of how bad a husband Luke was made us want Lucy to leave him -- but not to cleave him -- great horror.

I'm sure that Jodi appreciates your in-depth critique, Ms...er...Lady. :D

Barry!
Hey you zombie writing novelist person. Thanks for swinging by (no pun intended) and reading my madness. You took away from the story exactly what I wanted you too. Luke wasn't the greatest fella in the world, but did he deserve that? No way. Is the scarecrow real or Lucy's psychosis? How did Luke get on the pole? Did Lucy tie him up in one of her states or did the scarecrow snatch him up? And of course, the sheer of horror of seeing the woman he'd lived with for years coming at him with a blindfold on, scythe in hand. Yikes! I scared myself with this story! Thank you for the in depth comment. So cool to see how readers interpret a story. Happy Holidays, buddy!
