"Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you." ~ Friedrich W. Nietzsche

“Take it easy, man. I don’t know Lisa. I’ve never known a Lisa. And the first Lisa I hear of is squashed and her Slinky has leukemia. That’s seriously spooky.”

“Slinky had leukemia. He’s dead now...just like Lisa.”

Jordan squirmed at the word dead. It was a message in the shape of a child’s toy and he was falling down the stairs. "Okay, man, so how did Lisa get squished?"

"Squashed," Derek replied.

"Oh, yeah, well, squish, squash, smoosh? They all sound the same to me."

"Kid, you’re forgetting, she went insane. Cuckoo. Checked out to La La land. And in the land of crazy clowns and roving daisies, there's a big difference between squish, squash, and smoosh."

"So why'd she go insane?" Jordan asked.

"Lisa went insane, the way we all go insane. Someone hurts you, hurts you real bad. We all have our ways of coping. Some choose drugs, women, smoking, some..." He tilted the bottleneck head down, like he was guzzling. "Booze. Lisa chose schitzo. In the end," Derek’s pupils expanded, "the pain always comes back to get you."
They stood there.
Eye to eye.
Silent.
Jordan finally adverted his gaze and willed himself not to piss his pants.

     Tainted Lady  lies within

The moon doesn't rise tonight, but you follow the sounds of terrifed shrieks and yapping whoops of wonder. You stomp through the crowd. You walk straight to the white tent, through the dancing clowns who drop their flaming sticks when they see you and realize who you are. In the back of the tent is a little room of red silks and mirrors, a desk and a bed. The Man in Black resides here. He rises from the bed. “Penelope, we’ve missed you,” he says, but you know what he will do later as punishment. You raise the pitchfork above your head. He falls back on the bed and simply says nothing. He’s astounded, amazed, for the first time dumbfounded. This angers you. You want him to cry out as he made you. You want him to beg for mercy, to beg for forgiveness. But he won’t. You know this. You want to run the show, so you run him through with the pitchfork as he lies there looking at you. Then you pull it out and run him through again.

Beached Whale and I exchanged glances. "Raymond, put your hands down and drink your tea." Beached whale smiled her fishy grin, so l left my paws where they were. Stupid, smelly Beached Whale. Warthog sighed and motioned for Beached Whale to put two lumps in her tea. “I’m afraid, Raymond, if you continue to be uncooperative we’ll have to let Dr. Smith give you the electrical treatment again.” Warthog gave me the Evil Grin.

Her fingers went to work. It felt rough like the kitten's tongue. Her fingers stumbled over the scales, spikes along its spine, the sharp claws below its legs. Her lower lip trembled. Familiar, so familiar. “What is it, Papa?” She felt about the object’s face, the long snout, the slight gouges where its eyes had been.

“It is a reptile, a lizard. It is Lacerta, Cecilia Cher.”

She stood frozen. Ribbon hesitated. He turned and crouched to the ground. Those long fingers that had caressed her so sensuously sprouted claws. He hissed again.  Before she ran, Papa’s words reminded her. 'It is a reptile, a lizard. It is Lacerta, Cecilia Cher.'

She had been blind. Sight had nothing to do with it.

        Horror Through The Ages

I sat down on a nearby bench and crossed my silvery legs. The metal ducks quacked in the lava colored water. A fish, an unnatural iron color, splashed out of the water and snapped at a silver fly. Silver, metal, red… the colors were enough to drive one insane. I glanced up at the sun, its orange beauty streamed through the clouds, and I took comfort in the fact that I sat under the same one my grandfather had sat under. The same exact sun that had watched him kiss my grandmother under a real oak tree with limbs that stretched forever over a green canvas of grass. I thought of their real lips touching, skin against skin. The photograph was hidden under my mattress.

A ghost who can take over one's mind. Make them go crazy.
He was reported to have done that in the asylum.
His roommate chewed off his own fingers and ate them with tea.

Farmer Eb’s not so sure about that. He’s got himself one of those butcherin’ yards, and hotdog on Sam’s Hill, them dern zombie cows keep arising like Lazarus on repeat.  He just sits there on the strong wooden fence his grand pappy built back in 1929, and he’s
popping those stones out - aim, shoot, and fire- hard and fast like he’s one of them Yankee pitchers.
